A peaceful protest was staged by a group of concerned individuals who are against the demolition work of three government-owned buildings in favour of the My Rapid Transit (MRT) project. The rally lasted for almost an hour at the UDA Ocean, Plaza Warisan and Klang Bus Stand yesterday.

Stanley Yong, Chairman of the Committee to Preserve Jalan Sultan and Jalan Bukit Bintang, said the demolition of the three buildings should not be allowed.

"Public consultation has to be done before anything is carried out," he said, adding that they are not against any development but they just "want to tell them it must be coordinated."

According to the MRT Corp, the shophouses would not be affected by the construction, rather only three government-owned buildings would be sacrificed. It also noted that a proposal to straighten the line to Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock would call for over 20 private-owned shophouses being smashed down for a station.

Since there were no government-owned buildings in the area, more buildings had to be acquired.
