The Home Ministry will introduce the Car Park League Table (CPTL) programme, in a bid to recognise efforts exerted by shopping mall operators to ensure safety in their parking areas.
Datuk Lee Chee Leong, Deputy Minister, said the programme would evaluate cars parks based on the crime rate within their area.
"They will be evaluated on security in the area, lighting, panic button, safety equipment and more," said Lee.
Lee added that the ministry would prioritise big and renowned shopping malls first.
"We believe shopping malls will work hard to ensure no crime takes place in their car parks through this programme, thus attracting more patrons," he said.
Nonetheless, Lee said a meeting between representatives from relevant organizations is necessary before the CPTL programme is implemented.
Lee noted that the Prime Minister's Department's Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu), the Royal Malaysian Police and Town and Country Planning Department as well as the six National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) are expected to participate in the discussion.
Other agencies to join the meeting are the Local Government Department, Malaysian Retailers Association, Malaysian Complex Management Association, the online women's magazine VenusBuzz.com and several local authorities.
