The Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Real Estate and Housing Developers Association Malaysia (REHDA) has proposed for the adaption of the country's first affordable "no frills" homes.

Datuk Ng Seing Liong, past President of Rehda, said the house will be custom-finished by the owner but will be equipped with the basic facilities such as the toilet and kitchen.

However, Ng said that the house will have no partition to separate rooms "to allow owners to choose to have two or three rooms, depending on the owner's marital status or the number of children."

Ng added that the 'no frills' homes are 30 percent cheaper than affordable homes' current price between RM80,000 and RM350,000. The concept has already been introduced in the Philippines and in China.

Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung, Minister of Housing and Local Government, said the concept will be adapted as part of the sector's aim to have more innovative ways for building affordable homes.
