Surbana secures masterplan contract in Rwanda city
Jul 05, 2012
by Cheryl Tay Singapore-based urban planning company Surbana International Consultants has secured a deal from the City Council of Kigali for the masterplan of a 730 sq km capital city of the Republic of Rwanda. In 2009, Surbana first broke into Rwanda, when it worked on the masterplan for Kigali City's CBD (pictured), as well as on one of the city's three sub-districts. "The first phase of the new Kigali CBD, covering 80 hectares, has been developed as per our masterplan. More than 80 percent of the plots have been sold out, with construction of this new business district to start soon," said Jeffrey Ho, Managing Director of Surbana Urban Planning Group. The first masterplan for the Kigali CBD included a development control system that encouraged city officials to adopt a structured and orderly framework in their developments. Ho noted that the masterplan for Kigali will be based on a visionary and holistic approach in response to the challenges faced by Kigali. "The new masterplans will establish a new structure for the city, characterised by rejuvenation of the existing urban areas, transportation-led growth, development of new integrated residential townships at the suburban areas, and the development of an attractive green park network system." The new masterplan is set to be completed in 2013.
